Wow, I’m speechless, Nat! You're doing a great job with this article - the way you blend personal perspective, facts, and analysis to explore the complex topic of deepfakes is working really well. Phenomenal writing .

As of Summer 2021, the capability to produce convincing deepfakes was predominantly the domain of specialized tech companies. However, the advent of DALL-E 2, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion democratized this ability, making it accessible to a wider audience.

More recently, we've witnessed human-like text2speech that is (a) fast and (b) affordable [0]. We already know that fraudsters leverage the latest text2speech breakthroughs to launch large-scale attacks.

What we face now is a pressing need to develop robust countermeasures capable of withstanding the challenges posed by such sophisticated, scalable technologies.

Nat, I very much share your concerns regarding truth being difficult to determine, and this ultimately being awful for the survival of democracy. We're up against this today with extremists and ideologues issuing a record amount of false statements and fake news, and this is an international movement. It's very much akin to the realization that propaganda can keep a population under control, as you rightly point out.

I mainly wanted to say: I'd also really enjoy reading more stuff like the intro you provided here, where you talk about how it was growing up in the shadow of the USSR. That's a really interesting area to explore!

Thanks for weighing in, Andrew. I appreciate your kind feedback and continued support! Indeed, I'm deeply concerned about the future of humanity. However, I'm just trying to keep a balanced perspective.

Balance is what we need! it's tough to think about all the potential unintended consequences right now, but I think folks like us are trying to do what we can. That's really the best we can do, collectively.

Usual comprehensive and informative work Nat. Whilst I get your optimism my view is that the risks and issues associated with deep fake technology will far outweigh potential benefit, even with improvements in detection. In our polarised world there will be an abundance of groups who *want* to believe and exploit fakes which perpetuate their agendas.

Paul, I hope you're doing fine! Thanks for sharing your valued feedback! I'm afraid our world will become even more polarised and there is no way to stop it. However, let's stay positive 🙏 Wish you and your loved ones a beautiful Saturday!
