How to use Claude like a Pro
As we get to know Claude, it’s important to understand the values that guided its creation. Anthropic took a visionary route, grounding Claude’s development in what is termed “constitutional AI”.
Constitutional AI (CAI) is a framework steering AI systems to yield “helpful, honest, and harmless” outputs, grounded on a well-defined set of principles. These "Constitutional" directives are designed to deter the AI from participating in unethical or illegal activities.
Training Process
Self-Evaluation and Revision: Here, the model refines its own responses in line with the guiding principles.
Reinforcement Learning: In this stage, the AI leverages feedback generated from its own assessments, rooted in the constitutional principles, to opt for the most benign outputs.
Advantages of CAI
Scalable Oversight: Enables AI-driven supervision, substantially reducing the dependence on human oversight.
Transparency: The principles are explicit, fostering a system where operational directives are accessible and open for scrutiny.
Safe Training Environment: It negates the necessity for human evaluators to sift through harmful content, as CAI is proficient in filtering out detrimental outputs autonomously.
The guiding precepts of CAI are an amalgamation of insights derived from a wide array of resources, including the UN Declaration of Human Rights and established safety protocols from renowned AI labs, enveloping diverse global perspectives. These principles function as the ethical compass directing AI engagement and decision-making processes. Importantly, each principle holds a distinctive role, aiding in nurturing the model through various phases of its training journey.
By orienting Claude with a constitution that encapsulates the timeless virtues of humanity, Anthropic encourages a landscape where artificial intelligence operates with a conscience, making strides towards a future that is not just technologically advanced, but morally sound and inclusive.
Having established a deep understanding of the principles guiding Claude's operation, we are equipped to appreciate the nuances that differentiate it from other AI technologies. This naturally brings us to an important question:
How Claude is Different from GPT4?
While comparing Claude to GPT-4, it's evident that each system brings its unique strengths to the fore. GPT-4 stands tall with a rich array of features and advanced functionalities, positioning itself as a versatile tool capable of tackling a broad spectrum of tasks with deep understanding and nuance.
On the other hand, Claude opts for a more focused approach, carving out a niche where it excels. It prioritizes a streamlined user experience, honing in on specific use cases and impressing with enhanced capabilities in coding, mathematical computations, and reasoning tasks, thereby facilitating an environment where precision meets expertise.
What does Claude have that ChatGPT doesn't? One big difference is a 100,000-token context window, which means it can process about 75,000 words at once. Tokens are fragments of words used while processing text. That means Claude can analyze longer documents or hold longer conversations without losing its memory of the subject at hand. ChatGPT can only process about 8,000 tokens in GPT-4 mode.

This isn't to say one is categorically superior to the other; rather, they shine in different arenas. The true measure of their efficacy boils down to the individual preferences, objectives, and use cases of the user, offering a palette where one can choose the tool that aligns seamlessly with their vision and goals.
While both Claude and GPT-4 have their respective strong suits, tailored to different preferences and needs, it's important to dig deeper into the specific capabilities of Claude to fully grasp its potential in various applications. Let us initiate this exploration with the first step:
Step 1: Understand the Capabilities of Claude
In essence, Claude is an AI assistant that aims to be helpful, harmless, and honest (HHH). While it strives to engage in natural conversations and provide informative responses, it is essential to remember that Claude operates based on patterns derived from the data it was trained on and does not have subjective experiences.
Tips
Experiment: Engage Claude with different prompts and keenly observe its responses to understand what it can and cannot do well.
Patience: Remember, Claude is in its early stages; being patient will allow you to work with Claude as it continues to evolve.
Examples
Factual Questions:
"What is the capital of France?"
"Who wrote the novel To Kill a Mockingbird?"
Open-ended Questions:
"Can you suggest some tips to calm my nerves before public speaking?"
Dos and Don'ts
Do:
Provide Specific Prompts: To get the most relevant responses, avoid vague questions.
Experiment: Keep trying different approaches to find what works best with Claude.
Don't:
Assume Human-level Intelligence: Claude is not a human and thus has limitations.
Ask Personal Questions: Claude does not know personal details about you.
Step 2: Learn to Write Effective Prompts
Learning to write effective prompts helps in extracting useful and relevant responses from Claude. It is a gradual process that involves understanding and leveraging Claude's strengths and limitations.
Tips
Focus on Prompting for Useful Information: Use Claude to get factual details, summaries, and how-to guides.
Experiment with Different Content Types: Try asking Claude to create content like stories, recipes, and more, and observe where it excels and where it faces difficulties.
Refinement: Based on Claude’s initial responses, understand what worked and what didn't, and fine-tune your prompts accordingly.
Examples
Useful Information:
"Can you explain what causes the seasons on Earth in simple terms?"
Different Content Types:
"Can you write a short fairy tale about a talking frog?"
Refine based on Results:
"What is the plot of the book Moby Dick?"
(If response is vague, refine to) "Can you briefly summarize the main plot points and characters in the novel Moby Dick in 3-4 sentences?"
Dos and Don'ts
Do:
Prompt for Different Types of Content: Feel free to ask Claude for a variety of content types, from stories to advice.
Don't:
Expect Perfect Grammar: While Claude aims to provide coherent responses, they might not always be grammatically perfect.
Step 3: Allowing Claude to Say ‘I Don’t Know’ to Avoid Hallucinations
Claude is meticulously designed to be an honest and helpful assistant. However, it may still sometimes "hallucinate", fabricating facts or details in an effort to assist as much as possible. These hallucinations can sometimes involve "seeing" things in the inputs that aren't really there.
To foster a healthier interaction and to prevent these hallucinations, it is advisable to give Claude explicit permission to say "I don't know" in response to questions it can't answer. This approach takes advantage of Claude's literal interpretation of instructions, helping avoid misinformation that might arise from an attempt to "help" through fabrication.
It’s important to note that Claude lacks the implicit social understanding that humans possess — it doesn't naturally understand that providing a fabricated response is worse than admitting ignorance. Hence, encouraging Claude to express uncertainty is a strategy to maintain truthful and reliable communication.
Here’s how you can effectively communicate with Claude to avoid hallucinations according to an official source:
Bad Prompt:
Human: What is the heaviest hippo ever recorded?
Bad output
Assistant: The heaviest hippo ever recorded was a bull named Hubert, who weighed 5,000 kg or 11,023 lbs. Hubert was measured in Kenya in the early 20th century. Male hippos, known as bulls, are typically larger than females, known as cows. Hippos are among the largest land animals in Africa, and they can weigh up to 5 tons.
This is incorrect.
Good Prompt
Human: Answer the following question only if you know the answer or can make a well-informed guess; otherwise tell me you don't know it.
Good Output
Assistant: I'm sorry, I don't know the exact weight of the heaviest hippo ever recorded. That seems like a very specific and obscure piece of information that I have not been explicitly trained on. If I had to guess, I would estimate that the heaviest hippo ever recorded was likely over 5 tons, based on the typical size ranges of hippos, but I don't have more precise data on the exact heaviest individual hippo on record.
In this step, we’ve learned the value of phrasing our prompts to Claude in a way that encourages accurate and reliable responses, fostering a conversation that is both informative and honest. Encouraging Claude to admit when it doesn’t know something is a key strategy in obtaining truthful responses and avoiding the pitfalls of AI hallucinations.
Limitations to Keep in Mind
As you interact with Claude, it is essential to be aware of its existing limitations to facilitate a smoother, more productive conversation. Here are some important points to note:
Role-playing: Claude role-plays as an assistant. This means it may incorrectly state its abilities or claim to update a memory it doesn't possess.
Arithmetic and reasoning errors: It can sometimes make errors with complex arithmetic, reasoning, and even with basic tasks. Following long lists of instructions accurately can also be a challenge.
Hallucinations and fabrications: Claude might occasionally hallucinate or fabricate information, adding details from its "memory" that aren’t actually present in long documents.
No real-time internet access: Although Claude has been trained with vast information from the internet, it doesn't have real-time access to the internet to pull in the latest data.
Outdated data: Claude’s training involved data that could be up to two years old, hence it may not be abreast with the very latest information.
Unaware of the current date and recent events: It lacks awareness of the current date and recent happenings around the world.
No real-world actions: Claude can suggest actions but isn't capable of executing any real-world actions.
Cannot browse the internet: While it can recommend what to search for, it cannot perform internet searches on its own.
By understanding these limitations, users can tailor their prompts to get the most reliable and useful responses from Claude.

Hello, Nat. I found your substack the other day. A lot of good information.
However in this article, a lot of the information is very general and can be applied to any AI system that we interact with. "Mastering Claude" seems like a slight exaggeration.
I noticed the article did not mention Claude has a content filter, so you can't discuss anything that violates its content guidelines (basically anything remotely controversial or sensitive).
As far as I can tell, you are also required to give Anthropic your phone number in order to create an account on their site, which makes no sense since they already have the IP address and the device you are using to log in. And there is no reason for them to call or text you. I went ahead and did it, but I don't get why the AI industry in particular requires it.
Overall Claude is probably the best proprietary system out there after GPT-4 (which I also have issues with), but I think it lacks features that really make it stand out. I have found Claude to be slightly more comedic and satisfying to vent to, but that was probably due to differences in training methods, and not an intentional decision by the developers.
Thanks again, and keep up the good work,
Enoch
One word: excellent! Thanks, Nat. Very useful.
